Lion’s and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!
A Family Devotion for Disney Animal Kingdom
Read Animal Kingdom’s opening day dedication:
Welcome to a kingdom of animals… real, ancient and imagined: a kingdom ruled by lions, dinosaurs and dragons; a kingdom of balance, harmony and survival; a kingdom we enter to share in the wonder, gaze at the beauty, thrill at the drama, and learn. —Michael D. Eisner, April 22, 1998
Today we visit Animal Kingdom, a beautiful garden park recreating some of earth’s most beautiful, wild habitats that give you a close-up experience with God’s amazing creatures. Here in the jungles and savannahs, we will be reminded that God’s creation declares His glory.
Discussion Question: What’s your favorite animal? What makes that animal so special to you?
When God created the world — the sun, the moon, the stars, the oceans, mountains, plants and trees, fish, animals and people — he looked around at the every new thing and called it “very good.” (Genesis 1:31)
Discussion Question: If God called creation “very good” what do you think we can learn about Him when we study what he made?”
When we walk around Animal Kingdom today, let’s open our eyes to what we can learn about God by observing his creation!
- Creation Knows Who Made It: “Ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this?” – Job 12:7-9
- Creation Teaches Us About God: “Ever since the creation of the world his eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things he has made.” – Romans 1:20
When you look at a tiger, you can see God’s power. When you look at a macaw, you see God’s creativity. When you look at a the monkeys, you see God’s joy (and sense of humor).
But wait. The Bible says we’re not seeing all of God’s nature when we look at creation today. All this beauty is only a dim shadow of what he is preparing to show us in the future. (1 Corinthians 13:12, Revelation 21:1-3)
If this kind of beauty is only part of what God has in store for us, I can’t wait to see how beautiful it will be!
Prayer: Dear Creator God! Thank you for this beautiful world you created. When we discover all the animals and plants today, open our eyes to see who you are through the “very good” things you made. Amen.
